#OptOutside with us Nov 24!

“Opt Outside” Urban Trail Bike Ride and Hike

Preregistration is required; sign up at this link: https://optoutside2017.eventbrite.com.
The day after Thanksgiving (“Black Friday”) has become the day when many people in the U.S. frantically besiege the malls and big box stores in search of bargain holiday gifts. REI Co-op and the Trails and Open Space Coalition have a better idea. For the past several years, REI stores have closed on Black Friday, (which this year is November 24th), and encouraged their staff and members to get outside and enjoy nature, exercise and generally “opt outside”. The staff and volunteers at Trail and Open Space could not agree more!
In the spirit of REI’s #optoutside campaign, the Trails and Open Space Coalition is sponsoring a bike ride and hike on our urban trails. Bike Colorado Springs, a program of TOSC, will lead a leisurely ride/tour around the Legacy Loop in downtown Colorado Springs, and Trails and Open Space Coalition staff will lead a social hike along a scenic and historic portion of the Shooks Run Trail (the eastern leg of the Legacy Loop).
Both events are free and will begin and end at the Trails and Open Space Coalition office, located in the City’s Sustainacenter, 702 E. Boulder Street:

  • The bike ride will begin at 11:00am, with a planned arrival back the Sustainacenter around 2:00pm. The route is approximately 10-miles over mostly flat, paved trails with the exception of the natural surface trail through Monument Valley Park. Click here (http://bit.ly/2zYn5h7) for a route map with points of interest and stops along the way. If you can’t make the start of the ride, you can join us at one of the stops or do your own ride at another time.
  • The hike will begin at 1:00pm and encompass 1.6 miles along the Shooks Run Trail. Stops along the way will highlight some of the fascinating history of the Middle Shooks Run Neighborhood. Members of the Middle Shooks Run Neighborhood Association will be on hand to provide information and historical context for their unique neighborhood. Click here (http://bit.ly/2zJGD5T) for a map of the hike route.

Light refreshments and warm beverages will be provided at the Sustainacenter at 2:00pm
Special thanks to our program partners; REI, the Greenway Fund, CONO, and the Middle Shooks Run Neighborhood Association!
