Join us for a hike to the edge of Waldo Canyon, from Rampart Range Road; led by Bob Falcone, aka Hiking Bob. We will not be on the old trails in the canyon, since those are still under a closure order by the Forest Service. However, this will be a chance to see the effects of the fire. Occasionally, deer and bighorn sheep may be spotted, but the view of birds, wildflowers, and trees makes the trip worthwhile.
Hike will be around 6 miles long with 1500ft of elevation loss/gain. The first half-mile of the hike is steep, over rocky and unstable footing. Hikers need to be limber and sure-footed. After, that the hike is fairly easy, on existing trails. The hike returns on the same trail, so the final half-mile on the return will be steep with loose rocks. Due to the difficult terrain, please do not bring dogs on this hike.
When: Sunday, June 23rd, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm
Where: Meet at the upper parking lot at the Garden of the Gods Trading Post (on the west side of Garden of the Gods) at 8:00 am. Carpooling is encouraged since parking is very limited.
What to Bring: Please wear sturdy hiking boots and layers of clothing for all Colorado weather. Bring plenty of water, lunch and snacks. Hiking poles will be useful on the more difficult section of the trail. The entire hike is exposed, so please bring sunscreen.
