The City’s Water Resources Engineering Division is introducing Complete Creeks as a way to bring Educational and Recreational components into the design of stormwater infrastructure projects. The first major stormwater project is located in Sand Creek, just downstream of the Platte Avenue bridge. This 10-month stabilization project repaired approximately a half-mile section; filling and reshaping the creek, installing grouted boulder drop structures to safely step the creek down and rebuilding the natural habitat along the creek. It includes the first-ever Navigable Drop Structures that will allow access into and out of Sand Creek and accessibility from the newly created extension of the Sand Creek Trail which was an integral part of this project. Navigable Drop Structures will provide connectivity and safe passage to our urban bike lanes as well as to park & trails, and open space. Many new miles of unique multi-use trails will be created within our basins and these locations will be recreation destinations for a variety of users of all ages and abilities.
The City of Colorado Springs will be celebrating the completion by hosting Global Fat Bike Day on December 1, 2018! More details to come.
