Poster Mob for the Starlight April 21–help needed!

 

Help the Trails and Open Space Coalition with a POSTER MOB!
Saturday, April 21
10 am to 12 pm

Help us with guerilla postering!
We want to blanket Downtown and Old Colorado City with posters advertising the Starlight Spectacular.
This is a way you can help out TOSC with just a couple hours of your time.
We’ll meet at 9:45 am to get materials and tape, form into teams, and hit the streets! It’s a fun way to meet people in our local stores and help us get the word out about our biggest fundraiser of the year.

Second Annual Sustain-A-Fest April 14

You’re invited to Sustain-a-Fest 2018 at the Colorado Springs Center for Sustainability (“The Sustainacenter”). This 2nd Annual event is a community celebration of “Earth Day Every Day” with sustainability exhibits & activities, along with local food trucks, live music, demonstrations, and family friendly activities.

CS Bike Swap April 14, 11 – 3
Join the Trails and Open Space Coalition and a host of other community-minded sponsors as we attend the annual CS Bike Swap 2018. Time to get out your old cycling gear, bicycles and parts and you can sell them to fund new parts, or just come to browse the many separate tables and offerings that others will have available. Your new bike could be found this Saturday! Bike Colorado Springs will have a table set up with information about the organization, maps for the Legacy Loop and a draft of the upcoming e-bike map that highlights our many miles of Tier 1 and 2 urban trails.

Ute Valley Park Fire Mitigation Meeting April 17

The Colorado Springs Fire Department will be working with contractors to reduce wildfire risk in Ute Valley Park. Come to the informational meeting to learn about the project, and ask questions. For more information, call 719-385-7281.

Come celebrate $200,000 dollars in M.E.R. charitable giving!! Clean out your garages, closets and gear sheds all to help nonprofits!

  • Bring any lightly used or new outdoor gear/clothing and donate items to one of 24 nonprofits.
  • That day you will receive 15% off a single item as a thank you!
  • We hope you will donate to TOSC, AND at the same time there are many, many worthy nonprofits to support.
  • Come out and find out about the great work that MER is doing to help recycle outdoor gear and support nonprofit organizations at the same time!

Join the Friends of Red Rock Canyon at the Bristol Brewery Karma Hour on Tues, April 17th, from 6 – 8 pm. $1 of each pint sold will go to Friends of Red Rock Canyon. Bristol is in Ivywild School at 1604 S. Cascade Ave.

Hike and Bike in a car-free Garden of the Gods

This pilot event will eliminate motor vehicle access within the park from 5-10 am. During the Motorless Morning, visitors will be encouraged to park their vehicles at the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center or Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site.

Join Buffalo Lodge on Earth Day for a car-free, carefree bike ride in the Garden of the Gods. Meet at the Lodge and ride the Garden as many loops as you like and then meet up for waffles, coffee, mimosas and bloody Mary’s at the lodge after with suggested donation of $10 benefiting World Bicycle Relief. Bike Colorado Springs is sponsoring the first-ever Briargate Neighborhood Bike Ride. Working alongside representatives from NE COS Bikes!, we’ll be co-hosting a family-friendly bike ride on the trail system surrounding the newly opened John Venezia Community Park. This will be a ride that is friendly for the little pedalers in the family and a way for families to come out, and enjoy bicycle-themed fun.

We need more help on the trails!
If you want to work on trails and lead projects this may be the training for you. Space is limited so apply early. Applicants must have trails work experience, agree to a background check (no cost) and participate in two post-training work days.
Crew Leader Training is hosted by the Trails and Open Space Coalition, RMFI, Friends of the Peak and the City of Colorado Springs.

Middle Shooks Run
Spring Cleanup of Shooks Run Creek
Sat, April 21, 9am to 12pm
Celebrate Earth Day by helping clean up our neighborhood creek. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring gloves. We will clean the creek from Uintah Street south to Pikes Peak Avenue. Register and pick up trash bags at one of these locations:
Prairie Dog O’Byrne Park at 505 E Bijou Street (Bijou and Corona Streets)

North Shooks Run Park on Franklin Street just north of Willamette.

  • Represent the interests and point of view of Stratton Open Space in city policy and planning meetings.

Stratton Open Space comprises 318 acres of public land adjacent to Cheyenne Mountain High and Ridgeway Ave.

 

Bear Creek Garden–plots available for this year.
Plots are available for the Charmaine Nymann Community Garden at Bear Creek Gardens.  Opening day for the 2018 growing season is Saturday, April 21st.  Anyone interested in obtaining a plot should call John Poyzer (719) 576-2664 or Karen Stith (719) 634-4433 as soon as possible.

Volunteers needed for Pikes Peak Races this summer

 

Please consider being a volunteer for one of the Pikes Peak races. The Pikes Peak Racing organization is a supporter of the Trails and Open Space Coalition.Volunteers are critical to their success.
The Pikes Peak races include:
  • Garden of the Gods Race – 10 Mile and 10K – June 10
  • Summer Roundup Trail Run – Cheyenne Mountain State Park – 10K/Half Marathon July 8
  • Barr Trail Mtn Race – July 15
  • Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon – August 18 and 19.
