August 16, 2017–The Pikes Peak Greenway trail south of Janitell Rd is now complete and open! Devastating floods in 2015 damaged the trail, and it has been closed from Janitell Road south to the El Pomar Sports Complex since then. After a long process which involved claims with FEMA, securing new easements for the trail , construction and mitigation, we have our Greenway trail back!. THANK YOU TO THE CITY AND TO OUR PARKS DEPT–GREAT JOB!
April 24, 2017–We are happy to report that new trail easements have been secured and the trail construction on the Greenway south of Janitell will start within the next two weeks. This includes 4 sections of damaged trail from Janitell Road south to El Pomar Sports Complex. The repair project will take up to five months, weather dependent, and will be fully open to recreational traffic at that point. The project will have a website once the work begins in the coming weeks. It’s not yet posted, but check back in the coming weeks for more information: https://coloradosprings.gov/PPGWtrailfema
After the flood damage occurred in 2015, the City Parks Department began working with FEMA on the funding and repair of the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail south of Janitell. Flood water washed away large sections of the trail and surrounding land. In order for the City to repair the trail, the path had to be moved from its original location, which meant that the new trail was no longer be within the existing trail easement. The City had to get new legal access for the new trail. That process unfortunately held up the repair project by more than a year.
