Colorado Springs Parks Department announced ongoing and new FEMA repair projects in North Cheyenne Cañon, which will impact roads and trails in the area for the next three to six weeks. The scope of work includes slope stabilization, roadway repair, and drainage improvements to repair the flood damage sites.

The Cañon road will be closed to cars and bikes from 9am to 4pm daily Feb 2-6. The Cutler trail is closed because of repairs there. The Columbine Trail and Helen Hunt Falls/Silver Cascade Falls will be open, and the upper parking lot will be open – that will all be accessible via Gold Camp Road.

Mount Cutler Trail
The contractor, Water Company, continues to make steady progress on the construction of two retaining walls on the slope above the Mt Cutler Trail pedestrian bridge. The work is approximately 60% complete with the crews working on the last retaining wall. The Mount Cutler Trail will continue to be closed during construction work on the weekdays and reopen for hikers on the weekends only during the project. Alternative trails: the Columbine Trail, Silver Cascade Falls Trail at Helen Hunt Falls, the Chamberlain Trail, and Stratton Open Space.
North Cheyenne Cañon Road in North Cheyenne Cañon Park
The contractor, CMS, Inc. began the roadway repair in North Cheyenne Cañon Park last week. Park users may encounter lane closures as contractors repair various sections of the roadway damaged by the flood over the next few weeks.
The contractor will replace a damaged culvert in the park requiring North Cheyenne Cañon Road to be closed. North Cheyenne Cañon Road will be closed from the Mid Columbine Trailhead to Helen Hunt Falls. The closures will run from 9am to 4pm from Monday February 2nd to Friday February 6th, 2015. The roadway will reopen each evening.
During the roadway closure, North Cheyenne Cañon Park will remain open to recreational use and site seeing. The western portions of the park, including Helen Hunt Falls will be accessible via the alternative route: Cheyenne Rd to Cresta Rd/21st Street to Lower Gold Camp Rd to Gold Camp Rd.

High Drive
The contractor, Sun Construction, has made significant progress on the repair work along High Drive (see photo above) in the month of December. Two significant washouts have been repaired and the majority of road has been rough graded to repair the minor erosion. Additional repair to the culverts and roadside drainage ditch has also been completed. The worked is estimated at 80% complete with minor drainage repair and fine grading work remaining.
The recent cold weather and snowfall in the area have restricted work from occurring in the past few weeks. With the onset of a few warmer weather days’ work will be able to resume. Access to the Palmer Trail, Bear Creek Trail (USFS Trail #666) and the Captain Jacks Trail will remain open to the public. Recreational users on High Drive may encounter construction equipment throughout the project. Dog owners are strongly encouraged to keep their pets are on leash at all times.
