Friends of Ben Lomond

The friends of Ben Lomond (FOBL) is a citizens organization committed to preserving Ben Lomond Mountain as publicly accessible open space. Ben Lomond is the long table top mountain in the northwestern corner of El Paso County which parallels Highway 105 on the south side as you travel from Monument to Palmer Lake and County Line Rd on the north as you travel from I-25 to Palmer Lake. It is noted for the interesting rock layer about a quarter of the way down the mountain. Currently, it is privately owned, 190 acres in total, including a section of land that extends north from the mountain down to County Line Rd. It is a beautiful piece of property that many people think is worthwhile saving in its natural state.

FOBL is working with numerous partners in this venture. The Trust for Public Lands is handling all the legal and realty negotiations with the owner. The El Paso County Parks and Leisure Dept. has been working on many levels for 3 years now, including setting up monies through The Conservancy Trust Fund, GOCO, and the County itself. The Town of Palmer Lake has set aside donated funds and the Tri Rec District will be asking for open space and trail funding on the ballot this spring. FOBL will be responsible for raising about $300,000. The estimated cost is approximately $1.5 million at this time.

As we feel the growth all along the Front Range, we become more aware of the need for large pieces of land at which to look and enjoy. Our frayed nerves are soothed sometimes just by knowing that undeveloped land is available to walk in. Then we really gift ourselves by getting out into the beauty and openness of nature. The first step is to acquire the land so we can gift ourselves in such a needed way.

After FOBL raises the needed funds to help purchase the Mountain, we will be involved in the development of trails and open space. There are fundraising activities planned for the next 6 months including a concert by Chuck Pyle, a dinner, hiking outings, and a dance. If you would like more information, please ask for it online at suebuell@earthlink.net, call Sue at 710-481-2474, or write her at FOBL, PO Box 654, Monument ,CO. 80132. If you would like to make a donation toward this project, Please write your check to Trails and Open Space Coalition, memo to Ben Lomond, and send to the FOBL address above.
