TAX CREDITS

Recent actions by the state legislature have created a new promising option -- the Conservation Tax Credit. The legislation provides for a state tax credit of up to $100,000 for ranchers who donate conservation easements. Because few ranchers incur such a large tax debt, they may 'sell' their tax credit for cash (at a modest discount) to third parties who want to reduce tax liability and/or help preserve open space.
